Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

In the final days of December, Williams wed Denmark-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
