The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that worsened blaze threats and challenged its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Shows An Absence of Drought
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program confirmed that the entire state is without dry or drought conditions. This shift resulted from multiple significant storms that helped fill key lakes like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their typical levels.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays
The path to this point included powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Until late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were considered unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those remaining dry spots.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
However, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it runs off, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Water officials point out that it is not yet time to make predictions for the coming year.
“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance for the rest of the year.
