Weather experts are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are expected to be low, so extra layers essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Expected to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather could to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
