Schools in the northern part of Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group invaded the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, officials stated.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, according to a statement.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Area inhabitants informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
