Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
