He represents a respectable, earnest individual of positive aims, without undue arrogance or ego. Compare that with Boris Johnson, the brief Conservative leader, or the casual assumption of the former Conservative leader, each achieving minimal to justify conceited self-confidence.

Governing Difficulties

But, say the people, the Labour leader is more ineffective. As the nation's leader, he's short on leadership appeal, according to critics: more seriously, he lacks policy adaptability, ingenuity or instinct for changing opinions.

Predictably, anxiety among MPs will make talk of leadership change commonplace if the spring local elections go as badly as predicted – or, various commentators argue, earlier.

Potential Solutions

Officials face a contradiction: Labour's only hope resides in hopelessness. Accept they might be overwhelmed anyway, so employ their parliamentary advantage for the full parliament to follow their natural progressive principles: make radical tax reforms, generating substantial revenue.

Expect to lose subsequent votes, so do everything now. Forget opinion polls and public consultations; let voters see genuine commitment. The exclusive approach to restore some respect is to execute clearly what they think most correct and reasonable.

The Finance Minister correctly describes Reform "the most significant danger" to British values. As the Tories virtually merge with Reform, a political alliance of certain type looms.

Labour's duty is to do whatever it takes to block this outcome. Prepare for coalition, remain palatable for progressive partners when party affiliations becomes secondary to the fundamental boundary against an electoral threat unprecedented in modern history.

Such is an objective to overcome hopelessness.
