Grief as Popular South African DJ Gunned Down in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom opened fire on him before escaping on foot.
The motive of the attack remains unclear and no one has been arrested have been made, police said.
Details of the Attack
Law enforcement indicated that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a location near the city center landmark.
He had spent several hours at the building managing the installation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.
"The report indicates the man was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement said.
Security camera video showed a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what appeared to be a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.
Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the assault.
Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the crime scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and police have been following their trail to find their whereabouts," stated a police chief.
A Nation in Mourning
His family member, a close relative, stated the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"Words fail me. I am shattered," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were prepared to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She requested the public to avoid sharing explicit content from the incident, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's children.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that premiered on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.
Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was involved in various commercial activities, including protective services, supplying high-level security services and securing major functions across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in building administration and was involved in tenant removals.

His death has caused national trauma and led to an wave of remembrances from his followers, the government and political parties.
A government minister commented he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.
"He expressed his views fearlessly and impartially. He even spoke up against me and my policies as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we must aspire to be," the minister added.
A public representative said the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director expressed that "DJ Warras was not merely a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought happiness and vitality to every performance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."
In a statement, the broadcaster he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, warmth and sharp wit, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
