Failing to find an amazing experience at uni? You're not alone.

Students sharing experiences
Robert and Christina talk about their journeys of life at university.

One university attendee passed the majority of his freshers' week browsing through online platforms, reading posts about peers enjoying evenings out.

"I was just in bed," Robert recalls, depicting those days as the most isolated period of his life.

His housemates seldom socialized, and his program didn't seem very sociable.

Although he tried by going to taster sessions for different clubs, he couldn't find his people.

"I gradually lost my confidence," he says. "I believed individuals didn't desire to form friendships with me, or they didn't like me."

Digital Platform Contrasts

Originally, Robert had no intention of studying at university and was offered positions for following college.

However he saw his friends enjoying themselves as college students online.

"When you need to wake up for employment on weekdays at 9:00 and you see someone's been out on Wednesday night, you do start thinking others have it better," Robert explains.

Higher Education Assumptions

Media content and online platforms can idealize the notion of college existence.

Many individuals arrive at college with high expectations for what they imagine could be the greatest period of their lives.

Various learners arrive at college with "idealistic views," says a mental health professional.

Research Results

  • Through surveys of new students initially, the primary worry was fitting in and finding acceptance
  • In another survey conducted by analysts, 17% of students said they were without companions at university
  • 37% said they worried daily or weekly about building relationships

Individual Stories

A different attendee's social media content was filled with content of students enjoying themselves while sharing accommodation in college residences.

Yet when she relocated from London to Sheffield to pursue media studies, she found initial days "overwhelming" because of the substance involvement it involved.

She abstains from alcohol and had not experienced nightlife before.

"I did spend considerable time initially within my living space," she says. "I simply experienced a bit alienated."

Mental Health Considerations

According to recent research of more than 10,000 university attendees, 29% said they contemplated leaving university.

The main cause was psychological wellbeing, succeeded by monetary worries.

"Anxiety about these various aspects is very widespread, and normal," explains a support specialist.

Finding Solutions

Over periods, all three individuals eventually adapted and formed relationships.

Alisha made friends via her studies and using online platforms, while Christina felt happier once she was able to relocate with companions.

Helpful Recommendations

For Robert, now 24 and in his last year, it was participating in theater activities and getting a part-time job that helped him make friends.

The suggested approach to beginning learners struggling to socialize is to venture outside your living space and go to club and society taster events.

"Following several weeks of consistently showing up, individuals become familiar with you," he explains, "you become familiar with them, and friendships begin forming."
